Eco-living is an attitude. It’s about becoming
environmentally conscientious and responsible. From
an individual level it’s about making the choice to become more self-sufficient, and a good place to start is with our food dependency. Becoming more self-sufficient in this area not only benefits the health of ourselves and our families, it benefits the sustainability of our local community and our entire country.

Have you ever thought about where our food comes from? If purchased in a local grocery it is more than likely that those products have been shipped in from thousand of miles away. Granted many items that are processed or packaged require this not so ideal “emission depleting” transport means -- including many of the packaged organic alternatives available. Eco-living in this respect is first about choosing more reliable natural, organic or certified organic products (for your health, naturally), and secondly, about choosing packaged organic products that are produced more locally (for the health of our economy, of course). If not produced in our province at least consider choosing ones that are produced in Canada. A great resource that’s very motivating is the 100 Mile Diet (www.100milediet.org).

Now what about our fruits and vegetables? Back in the day this produce was supplied locally, again whether it was conventional or not. Today, and oddly enough, many major grocers are shipping in their produce from international suppliers. Have you ever considered the impact this has on our local producers? And what about our emissions? Yes, supply and demand is a factor, but we all know that the more we consume creates a demand which dominos into increased supply, so why not encourage and support this growth locally? Eco-living, from just the bare basics, is about supporting the localization of food production. Not only does this choice -- this very attitude -- encourage the growth within our farming communities, it ensures better quality, higher nutritional value, more economic control and leverages more independence for local survival.

Now without downsizing common reality here, we are fully aware that true Eco-living has its inconveniences, especially in a world were instant meals take precedence within our busy schedules. But consider this: every day we get opportunities to choose between something that is good for us and our Earth and something that is toxic. So starting today, make a GOOD choice!

In our community, we have access to meat shops, organic grocery delivery services, bakeries, Farmers Markets and locally produced products. By being selective, you can make Eco-living a part of your life, even if it starts with just one locally grown, home cooked meal per week!
